Common questions across our guides
Q01What is the difference between hot stamping foil and cold stamping foil?+
Hot stamping foil bonds to the substrate using a heated engraved die at 95–145 °C, 3–12 bar nip pressure and 0.2–1.5 s dwell — and runs on dedicated flatbed presses at 1,500–8,000 sheets/hour. Cold stamping foil bonds inline using UV-cured adhesive at room temperature on flexo or offset presses at 10,000–15,000 sph, with zero engraved-die cost. Hot stamping wins on edge sharpness, finish brilliance and substrate range (paper, plastic, leather, textile); cold stamping wins on speed, tooling cost and CMYK over-printability. See the Hot Stamping and Cold Stamping Foil pillar guides for the full decision matrix.
Q02What is hot stamping foil made of?+
Hot stamping foil is a 5-layer engineered film: (1) a 12–25 µm PET carrier that peels away after stamping; (2) a release wax coating; (3) a pigmented colour coat that defines the visible finish; (4) a ~50 nm vacuum-deposited aluminium metallization layer; and (5) a heat-activated adhesive that bonds the stack to the substrate. The total transferred image is only 1–2 µm thick.
Q03How do I choose between a manual, semi-automatic and fully-automatic foil stamping machine?+
Five press classes by volume. Manual clamshell ($1,500–4,000, 50–200 strokes/h) for proofing and on-demand stationery. Semi-automatic clamshell ($8,000–18,000, 600–1,500 sph) for short-run cards and small cartons. Fully-automatic flatbed small/medium ($45,000–90,000, 3,000–5,000 sph) for entry industrial carton lines. Fully-automatic flatbed large ($90,000–180,000, 4,000–7,000 sph on 1,050 × 750 mm sheets) for premium folding-carton volume production. Roll-to-roll web hot stamping at 60–150 m/min for labels and continuous-web tubes. See the Foil Stamping Machine buyer guide for the full tonnage / speed / cost matrix.
Q04What is the MOQ and lead time for stamping foil orders?+
Stock foils (gold, silver, common holographic, rose, copper, standard pearl/matte/brushed): MOQ 1 roll, FOB Shanghai in 5–7 days. Custom-width slit rolls: 5 rolls, 12–15 days. Custom Pantone-matched foil to ΔE ≤ 1.5: 1,000 m² MOQ, 25–30 days. Custom-logo registered holographic / OVD: 5,000 m² MOQ, 35–50 days plus a one-off origination charge of $1,500–4,500. Free A4 swatch packs ship in 5 business days to qualified B2B buyers.
