Hot wins on edge sharpness, brilliance and substrate range; cold wins on speed, zero die cost and CMYK over-printability.

    Q02Which is cheaper, hot or cold foil stamping?+

    Cold foil is cheaper per unit above ~5,000 impressions because it runs inline (no second press pass) and uses no engraved die — adhesive plates cost USD 50–150 vs USD 200–800 for a brass hot-stamping die. Below 5,000 units the fixed-cost picture flips: hot foil's lower setup time and quicker make-ready beat the inline-press hourly rate. Typical break-even is 5,000–8,000 sheets.

    Q03Can you over-print CMYK on cold foil but not on hot foil?+

    Yes. Cold foil is laid down inline before the CMYK print units, so process inks print directly over the metallic layer in the same pass — unlocking unlimited metallic colour combinations from a single silver foil grade. Hot foil is applied off-line as a finishing step, so CMYK over-printing requires a second press pass and risks ink adhesion issues over the metallic surface.

    Q04Which produces brighter metallic finish, hot or cold foil?+

    Hot foil is 10–20 % brighter (typically 280–340 GU at 60°) because the heat lets the aluminium layer reflow against the substrate, eliminating micro-air-gaps. Cold foil sits on top of a UV-cured adhesive bead that introduces a slight haze; gloss reads 240–290 GU at 60°. For luxury packaging (cosmetics, spirits, premium gift) the visible difference favours hot foil.

    Q05Which substrates work with hot vs cold foil?+

    Hot foil works on coated and uncoated paper, paperboard up to 600 gsm, leather, PVC, PET, wood, textile and (with the right adhesive) some glass and metal. Cold foil is limited to substrates that accept a UV-curable adhesive — coated paper, coated board, PE, BOPP and shrink film. Uncoated paper absorbs the adhesive and ruins the metallic effect; switch to hot foil for uncoated stocks.

    Q06What is the maximum running speed for each process?+

    Cold foil runs inline at full press speed: 150–400 m/min on flexo presses and 9,000–15,000 sph on offset. Hot foil maxes out at 5,000–8,000 sph on the fastest sheetfed presses (e.g. our XG1080G hot foil blocking machine at 5,500 sph) and 100–250 m/min on rotary foiling units. For high-volume folding cartons (> 50,000/job) cold foil wins on throughput.

    Q07Do I need a different foil grade for hot vs cold processes?+

    Yes — the two processes use chemically distinct foil constructions. Hot stamping foil has a heat-activated adhesive layer that needs 95–145 °C to bond. Cold stamping foil has no heat-activated adhesive; the metallic layer adheres only where UV adhesive has been pre-printed. The foils are not interchangeable.     Choose hot foil. For runs under 5,000 impressions, the per-unit economics favour hot foil (cheaper setup, no inline press time billed), and the visibly brighter finish matters for premium SKUs. Cold foil only pulls ahead for runs above 5,000–10,000 units where the inline-press time savings dominate the cost equation.
