Transparent Foil — Clear & Transparent Holographic Hot Stamping Foil

Transparent foil — also called clear hot stamping foil or transparent overlay foil — is a hot-stamping foil whose opaque colour layer is replaced by a clear optical coat (with optional ultra-thin metallisation + holographic embossing), so the substrate stays fully visible through the stamped area while the foil adds gloss, matte, rainbow holographic or anti-counterfeit security effects on top. This guide covers the 6 stock variants — led by transparent holographic foil — plus optical specs, press settings, security patterns and MOQ-from-1-roll sourcing.

    What is transparent foil?

Transparent foil (also: clear foil, clear hot stamping foil, transparent overlay foil) is a hot stamping foil whose opaque colour pigment is removed and whose aluminium layer is either omitted or reduced to ~10 nm — thin enough to stay 60–80% optically transmissive while still carrying a holographic diffraction pattern. The result: the underlying CMYK print, photograph, brand colour or hot-stamped metallic remains fully visible, with the foil contributing gloss, matte, rainbow or anti-counterfeit security effects on top. The dominant sub-variant — transparent holographic foil — is the standard finish for premium packaging accents over full-colour artwork, security overlays on certificates and ID cards, and layered combination stamping (gold base + transparent rainbow on top). Browse the matching Holographic Hot Stamping Foil range or read the Holographic Foil guide for the full 6-pattern catalogue. Compare against matte foil, brushed foil or fluorescent foil for opaque metallic effects.

How transparent holographic foil is made — 5-step production sequence

    01

    PET carrier coating

12–25 µm PET film is coated with a release wax and a clear (un-pigmented) optical lacquer that will form the visible stamped layer.

    02

    Ultra-thin metallisation

A ~10 nm aluminium layer (vs ~50 nm on opaque foil) is vacuum-deposited — enough to carry the holographic pattern, thin enough to stay 60–80% optically transmissive.

    03

    Holographic embossing

A precision-engraved roller carrying the holographic master (rainbow, pillar-of-light, dot-matrix or custom logo) hot-presses the diffraction pattern into the clear lacquer + thin aluminium at 110–140 °C.

    04

    Heat-activated adhesive

A clear heat-activated adhesive is back-coated so the foil bonds cleanly to the substrate during stamping without yellowing the optical layer.

    05

    Slitting & optical QC

Master rolls are slit to customer widths (200–1,600 mm) and 100% inspected for pinholes, optical transmission (60–80%), pattern registration, and ΔE drift on the underlying substrate after stamping.

    Technical FAQ

    Technical Specifications FAQ

    Q01What is transparent foil?+

Transparent foil — also called clear foil, clear hot stamping foil or transparent overlay foil — is a hot-stamping foil whose colour-lacquer + metallised aluminium layers are replaced by a clear (or partially metallised) optical lacquer. After stamping, the underlying substrate stays fully visible through the deposited layer, while the foil itself adds a glossy, matte, holographic-rainbow, or security-pattern optical effect on top. Construction is the same as standard foil — 12–25 µm PET carrier + release wax + clear optical coat (+ optional embossed holographic pattern) + heat-activated adhesive — minus the opaque colour pigment and minus (or with a much thinner) aluminium layer.

Q02Transparent foil vs transparent holographic foil — what's the difference?+

Transparent foil is the umbrella term; transparent holographic foil is its highest-volume sub-variant. (1) Plain transparent foil — a clear lacquer-only layer that adds a glossy or matte sheen over the substrate, used for spot-varnish-style highlights and overprint protection. (2) Transparent holographic foil (also: clear holographic foil, transparent rainbow foil) — a clear lacquer + ultra-thin (~10 nm) partially metallised aluminium embossed with a holographic master, so the substrate is still readable through it while the foil casts a rainbow / pillar-of-light / security pattern. We stock both; the holographic variant accounts for ~80% of transparent foil B2B orders.

Q03Transparent holographic foil vs opaque holographic foil — when to use which?+

Use transparent holographic foil when you need the rainbow / security effect AND the underlying CMYK print, photograph, brand colour or hot-stamped gold/silver must remain visible — typical for premium packaging where holographic accents sit on top of full-colour artwork, for anti-counterfeit overlays on certificates and banknotes, and for layered combination stamping (gold base + transparent rainbow on top). Use opaque holographic foil when the foil itself is the decoration and the substrate underneath does not need to show — typical for solid logos, full holographic backgrounds, scratch-off panels.

Q04How is transparent holographic foil made?+

Five steps. (1) 12–25 µm PET carrier coated with release wax and a clear optical lacquer. (2) Ultra-thin aluminium (~10 nm, vs ~50 nm on opaque foil) is vacuum-deposited — enough to carry the holographic diffraction pattern but thin enough to stay 60–80% optically transmissive. (3) An embossing roller carrying the holographic master (rainbow, pillar-of-light, dot-matrix, custom logo) hot-presses the diffraction pattern into the lacquer + aluminium at 110–140 °C. (4) Heat-activated adhesive is back-coated. (5) Slit to customer width (200–1,600 mm) and 100% inspected for pinholes, optical transmission (target 60–80%) and pattern registration.

Q05How to stamp transparent / clear holographic foil cleanly?+

Three rules. (1) Lower nip pressure than opaque foil — 5–8 bar instead of 8–12 bar — because the thinner aluminium tears under standard pressure. (2) Use a polished magnesium or brass die at 110–125 °C (slightly cooler than opaque foil); overheating burns the clear lacquer and yellows it. (3) Always test on the exact production substrate first — the substrate colour and ink coverage underneath determine the perceived rainbow intensity. Run on any sheetfed stamping press; see our foil stamping machine guide for press selection.

Q06What patterns and variants are available?+

6 stock transparent variants. (1) Clear Gloss — no aluminium, glossy overprint layer. (2) Clear Matt — no aluminium, matt protective layer (gloss 5–15 GU). (3) Clear Holographic Rainbow — most-ordered, full spectrum diffraction. (4) Clear Pillar-of-Light — vertical light columns, premium packaging signature. (5) Clear Dot-Matrix / Security — anti-counterfeit, banknote-grade. (6) Clear Custom-Logo Holographic — your logo embossed into the diffraction pattern (1,000 m² MOQ + engraving fee, 35–45 days). All variants run at 200–1,600 mm widths; 4 stock patterns ship from 1 roll.

Q07What substrates and end-uses work best with transparent foil?+

Best on coated SBS / FBB 250–500 gsm, premium label paper, BOPP / PET / PVC films (0.05–0.8 mm), security paper, ID cards, and CMYK-printed cartons where preserving the underlying artwork is mandatory. Transparent holographic foil is the standard finish for: premium cosmetics and fragrance cartons (rainbow accents on full-colour photos), pharmaceutical security labels, certificate and diploma overlays, banknote and ID-card hologram strips, premium spirits gift boxes, trading cards, and luxury chocolate packaging. Pairs well with combination stamping over hot-stamped gold or silver for a multi-layer premium effect.
