What is matte foil?
Matte foil (also written matt foil) is a hot stamping foil whose top surface scatters light diffusely instead of reflecting it, giving a low-gloss metallic finish at roughly 5–15 GU (60°) — about one-eighth the reflectivity of standard polished foil. The two best-selling shades are matte gold foil and matt silver foil; both are stock items, both run on identical press settings, and both dominate 2025–2026 premium packaging design in beauty, electronics, spirits, pharma and stationery. How matte foil is made — 5-step production sequence
PET carrier coating
12–25 µm PET film is coated with a release wax and a pigmented colour lacquer that defines the base shade (matte gold, matt silver, rose-gold, black, etc.).
Matte topcoat formulation
A micro-textured matting agent (silica or proprietary polymer) is dispersed into the topcoat at 8–15% loading to scatter incident light and lock gloss at 5–15 GU.
Vacuum metallisation
A ~50 nm aluminium layer is vacuum-deposited under the colour coat in a roll-to-roll chamber, providing the underlying metallic brightness.
Scratch / outdoor topcoat (premium grades)
Premium grades receive an additional scratch-resistant or UV-stable topcoat (pencil hardness 2H–3H, BWS 6–7) without raising gloss above 15 GU.
Slitting & QC
Master rolls are slit to customer widths (200–1,600 mm) and 100% inspected for pinholes, ΔE colour drift (≤ 1.5) and gloss-unit consistency (±2 GU).

Matte gold foil (warm — Pantone 871-equivalent base, ΔE ≤ 1.5 vs reference) reads as understated luxury and is the dominant matte choice in 2025–2026 beauty, fragrance, premium spirits, and wedding stationery. Matt silver foil (cool — Pantone 877-equivalent base) reads as technical / architectural and dominates electronics packaging, pharmaceuticals, supplements, and minimalist skincare. Both run on identical press settings (115–135 °C, 0.4–0.8 s dwell) and both are available in standard, scratch-resistant, and outdoor-grade formulations. Q03Matte foil vs gloss (polished) foil vs brushed foil — what's the difference?+
All three start from the same metallised PET stack and differ only in how the top surface treats light. Gloss / polished foil: 80–100 GU, full mirror reflection — classic shiny gold or silver. Matte foil: 5–15 GU, fully diffuse, no visible grain or sparkle, very low fingerprint visibility — premium understated read. Brushed foil: 25–45 GU, directional hairline grain that mimics brushed metal. Matte hides fingerprints best of the three and pairs cleanly with uncoated and soft-touch substrates where gloss foil would look mismatched.
Q04How to stamp matte foil cleanly without bleed or speckle?+
Three rules. (1) Lower temperature than gloss foil: 115–130 °C is the sweet spot — overheating melts the matte topcoat and creates shiny patches at the edge. (2) Use a polished (non-textured) brass or magnesium die with sharp 90° walls so the matte surface stays uniform across the stamped area. (3) Match dwell to substrate: 0.4 s on coated SBS, 0.6–0.8 s on uncoated or soft-touch laminated stock. Q05Which substrates work best with matte gold and matt silver foil?+
Matte foil is exceptional on uncoated, soft-touch-laminated, kraft, recycled, and textured stocks (linen, felt, hammer) where it visually integrates with the substrate texture instead of competing with it. It also runs beautifully on coated SBS / FBB 250–500 gsm, BOPP / PET / PVC films (0.05–0.8 mm), label paper, and soft-touch laminated cartons. Avoid heavily glossy varnished surfaces — the surrounding gloss makes the matte foil look dull instead of premium. For full-coverage matte metallic backgrounds on flexo and offset, the matching cold foil is available.
Q06Is matte foil scratch-resistant and lightfast?+
Standard matte foil rates pencil hardness H and Blue Wool 4–5 (12–24 months indoor without visible fade) — fine for retail packaging. For high-handling items (cosmetics caps, electronics boxes, gift cards) we supply Premium Scratch-Resistant matte foil (pencil hardness 2H, ≥ 500 cycles Taber CS-10 / 500 g, BWS 5–6).
