What is Cold Foil Printing?

The 5-Step Technical Sequence
Adhesive Application
A UV-curable adhesive is printed via a flexo or offset plate in the exact image geometry.
Foil Lamination
The metallised PET web is nipped onto the wet adhesive under calibrated pressure rollers.

Cold foil printing is an inline metallic decoration process that transfers an aluminium-coated PET film to a substrate using a UV-cured adhesive — at room temperature, with no heated die. The adhesive is printed in the image shape on a flexo or offset press, a foil web is laminated under a nip roll, the adhesive is UV-cured, and the carrier film is stripped. The result is a mirror-bright metallic image that can then be overprinted with CMYK in the same press pass at 150–400 m/min.

Choose cold foil printing for runs above 5,000 units, heat-sensitive substrates (lightweight BOPP, shrink film), and jobs that need full-coverage metallics overprinted with CMYK to create custom colours (rose gold, copper, holographic rainbows). Choose hot foil stamping for short runs under 5,000 units, uncoated luxury board, raised tactile effects (combined with embossing), and the highest mirror brightness on premium spirits, cosmetics and book covers.

Q04Which substrates are best for cold foil printing?+
Coated paperboard (SBS, FBB), BOPP, PE, PET, and shrink PVC/PETG all run well. Coated stocks hold the UV adhesive in a sharp dot and deliver the highest brightness. Uncoated paper absorbs the adhesive and dulls the metallic — for uncoated luxury board, switch to hot foil stamping. Cold foil is the default choice for heat-sensitive films because the process adds zero thermal load.

Flexo label presses with a dedicated cold-foil unit (Gallus, Nilpeter, Mark Andy, Bobst) and sheetfed offset presses with a cold-foil module (KBA Rapida, Heidelberg Speedmaster, Komori Lithrone).
