Adhesion is the single most common failure mode for hot stamping foil in production. A brilliant gold finish that lifts off the carton in transit is a recall; one that survives a tape pull but fails a rub test in the field destroys brand trust. This 2026 QC guide standardizes the four adhesion tests every converter should run on incoming metallic gold, silver, holographic and cold foil rolls, plus the substrate-specific thresholds you should be writing into your supplier spec sheet.
Why hot stamping foil adhesion fails
Foil adhesion is a three-layer chemistry problem — the release coat must let go of the PET carrier cleanly, the color/metal layer must transfer intact, and the size coat must bond to the substrate. Mismatches between any of these three layers and your stamping window (temperature, pressure, dwell time) produce the classic defects: pinholes, weak edges, ghosting, and post-application lift. Test 1 — ASTM D3359 Tape Pull (cross-cut adhesion)
The ASTM D3359 tape-pull is the industry-standard go/no-go test for stamped foil. It takes 90 seconds per sample and correlates well with real-world handling damage.
- Cut a 1 cm × 1 cm grid into the stamped area using a 6-blade cross-cut tool (1 mm spacing for films <50 µm; 2 mm for paperboard).
- Apply a 75 mm strip of 3M 610 or Permacel 99 tape over the grid; smooth with a 2 kg roller, 1 pass each direction.
- After 90 ± 30 seconds, pull the tape off at a 180° angle in 0.5–1.0 s.
- Grade per ASTM D3359 Class 5B (0% removal) down to 0B (>65% removal).
Pass threshold: 5B on coated paperboard and PVC cards, ≥4B on PP/PE plastic, ≥3B on textured leather. Anything below requires re-tuning of dwell time or a switch to a high-tack adhesive grade — see the adhesive line for UV-curable options.
Test 2 — AATCC Crockmeter Rub Test
The crockmeter simulates 6 months of consumer handling in 10 cycles. It is the de-facto requirement for cosmetic foil packaging and premium greeting cards.
- Dry crock: 10 cycles, 9 N load, white cotton finger. Grade 1–5 against the AATCC gray scale.
- Wet crock: Re-wet finger to 65 ± 5% pickup, repeat 10 cycles.
Pass threshold: ≥4 dry / ≥3 wet for cosmetics and spirits labels; ≥3 dry / ≥2 wet for general carton stock. Holographic and pearlized foils tend to score 0.5 grades lower — plan accordingly when picking holographic rainbow foil for high-touch SKUs.
Test 3 — Thumbnail / Coin Scratch
A fast in-line check used by press operators between job changes. Drag a clean US quarter (or 2 € coin) across the stamped area at ~45° with light pressure. Any visible silver streak = fail. This test catches under-cured foils inside 5 seconds and should be logged at start-up, mid-run, and end of every print job on your XG1080G stamping machine or equivalent.
Test 4 — Chemical & Solvent Resistance
Required for any foil that will contact perfume, alcohol, sanitizer or food oils. Soak a cotton swab in the target chemical and rub the stamped area for 30 seconds; rinse and dry. Score per ISO 4628-1.

- Incoming roll: 1 tape + 1 crock test per master roll on lab-stamped coupons.
- Press start-up: Thumbnail + tape every job changeover.
- In-process: Thumbnail every 30 minutes; tape every 2 hours.
- Finished goods: 1 crock + 1 chemical test per pallet for cosmetic / pharma SKUs.
