Digital Foil Printing & Digital Foil Stamping
The complete guide to toner-reactive foiling — process, equipment, foil colors, cost comparison vs hot and cold foil, and why it is the only metallic method economically viable for runs of 1 to 500 units.

What is digital foil printing?
Digital foil printing (also called digital foil stamping or digital sleeking) adds metallic foil to digitally printed artwork without dies, stamping presses, or UV adhesive. Black toner is reactivated by heat in a laminator at 110–130 °C, gripping a polyester-carrier foil sheet only where toner exists. It is the only metallic decoration method economically viable for runs of 1 to 500 units and the foundation of every personalized-foil wedding invitation, named gift box, and POD metallic book cover on the market. How digital foil stamping works — 5 steps
Print toner artwork
Print the foil area in black toner on a dry-toner digital press (HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, Konica Minolta, Ricoh) or laser printer.
Laminate foil sheet
Lay the digital toner foil over the printed sheet and feed both through a heated roller laminator at 110–130 °C.
Foil bonds to toner
Heat reactivates the toner, which grips the foil only where toner exists. Foil bonds in a single pass — no UV, no die, no pressure stamping.
Peel carrier
Peel back the polyester carrier — foil remains on every toner pixel, perfectly registered to the printed image.
Overprint or finish
Optionally overprint CMYK on top with a second digital pass, or laminate, die-cut and ship. Total turnaround: 1 hour for a 100-sheet job.

Frequently asked questions
Q01What is digital foil printing?+
Digital foil printing (also called digital foil stamping, toner-reactive foiling, or digital sleeking) adds metallic foil to digitally printed artwork without dies, heat-stamping presses, or UV adhesive. The toner itself is reactivated by heat in a laminator, gripping a polyester-carrier foil sheet only where toner exists.
Q02Digital foil printing vs digital foil stamping — same thing?+
Yes, both terms describe the same toner-reactive foiling process. 'Digital foil printing' is common in North America; 'digital foil stamping' is more common in EU/UK and inherits vocabulary from hot foil stamping. Some vendors also call it 'digital sleeking'.
Q03What equipment do I need for digital foil printing?+
Three pieces: (1) a dry-toner digital press or laser printer (HP Indigo, Xerox iGen/Versant, Konica Minolta AccurioPress, Ricoh Pro C series); (2) a heated roller laminator running at 110–130 °C; (3) digital toner foil sheets in your chosen colors. Total entry cost: ~$2,500–$8,000 if you already own the digital press.
Q04What foil colors and finishes are available?+
Standard digital toner foil colors include gold (multiple shades), silver, copper, rose gold, red, blue, green, black, white, and holographic rainbow. Available in A3 (320×450 mm), A4 sheets and roll formats for inline laminators.
Q05Digital foil printing vs hot foil — which is cheaper?+
Digital foil wins below ~500 units (no $85–$500 die-setup cost). Hot foil wins above ~500 units due to lower per-unit foil and labor cost at scale. Crossover depends on coverage and substrate.
Q06Will digital foil work on my Xerox / HP Indigo / Konica?+
Yes for all dry-toner systems (Xerox iGen, Versant; Konica AccurioPress; Ricoh Pro; Canon imagePress; Kyocera; any standard laser printer). HP Indigo uses liquid ElectroInk — digital foil works but requires a specific Indigo-compatible foil grade with adjusted release coating.
