    What is Cold Foil Printing?

Unlike traditional hot stamping, cold foil printing is an in-line process that bonds metallic foil to substrates with UV-cured adhesive — enabling high-speed application, perfect registration with CMYK, and sophisticated gradients without expensive brass dies. For the bare concept see What is Cold Foil; for the step-by-step production process see the Cold Foil Stamping Guide; or jump to the Cold Stamping Foil product page for grades and pricing.

    The 5-Step Technical Sequence

    01

    Adhesive Application

A UV-curable adhesive is printed via a flexo or offset plate in the exact image geometry.

    02

    Foil Lamination

The metallised PET web is nipped onto the wet adhesive under calibrated pressure rollers.

    03

    UV Curing

A UV-LED or mercury lamp instantly cures the adhesive through the carrier — bonding the aluminium layer.

    04

    Carrier Stripping

The spent PET carrier is rewound; only the metal layer remains on image areas — foil-saver minimises waste.

    05

    Inline Overprint

Downstream units overprint CMYK on the metallic base to render rose gold, copper, or rainbow tones.

    Technical FAQ

    Technical Specifications FAQ

    Q01What is cold foil printing?+

Cold foil printing is an inline metallic decoration process that transfers an aluminium-coated PET film to a substrate using a UV-cured adhesive — at room temperature, with no heated die. The adhesive is printed in the image shape on a flexo or offset press, a foil web is laminated under a nip roll, the adhesive is UV-cured, and the carrier film is stripped. The result is a mirror-bright metallic image that can then be overprinted with CMYK in the same press pass at 150–400 m/min.

Q02Cold foil printing vs hot foil stamping — which should I choose?+

Choose cold foil printing for runs above 5,000 units, heat-sensitive substrates (lightweight BOPP, shrink film), and jobs that need full-coverage metallics overprinted with CMYK to create custom colours (rose gold, copper, holographic rainbows). Choose hot foil stamping for short runs under 5,000 units, uncoated luxury board, raised tactile effects (combined with embossing), and the highest mirror brightness on premium spirits, cosmetics and book covers.

Q03What does cold foil printing cost per unit?+

At 50,000-unit runs cold foil printing costs USD $0.008–$0.025 per 100 cm² of coverage, plus a one-time UV-adhesive printing plate ($80–$180). That is 30–60% lower than hot foil for the same coverage above 5,000 units because there is no engraved die, no second pass, and no machine downtime — the foil is applied inline with the rest of the press run.

Q04Which substrates are best for cold foil printing?+

Coated paperboard (SBS, FBB), BOPP, PE, PET, and shrink PVC/PETG all run well. Coated stocks hold the UV adhesive in a sharp dot and deliver the highest brightness. Uncoated paper absorbs the adhesive and dulls the metallic — for uncoated luxury board, switch to hot foil stamping. Cold foil is the default choice for heat-sensitive films because the process adds zero thermal load.

Q05What presses support cold foil printing?+

Flexo label presses with a dedicated cold-foil unit (Gallus, Nilpeter, Mark Andy, Bobst) and sheetfed offset presses with a cold-foil module (KBA Rapida, Heidelberg Speedmaster, Komori Lithrone). Both need a UV-LED or mercury UV lamp positioned immediately before the foil nip. For full equipment specs see our Cold Foil Printing Machine Guide.

Q06What is the minimum order quantity for cold foil rolls?+

All-in Pack supplies cold foil printing rolls from MOQ 500 sqm in 12–16 µm PET grades, standard widths 200–1,650 mm, ΔE ≤ 1.5 colour consistency across rolls, lead time 7–15 days, free A4 samples. Common grades cover gold, silver, copper, rose gold and holographic rainbow.

Q07Can cold foil printing be overprinted with CMYK?+

Yes — that is the single biggest advantage over hot foil. A silver cold-foil base overprinted with magenta becomes rose gold; overprinted with yellow + cyan it becomes copper. A single silver foil grade plus your CMYK inks generates an unlimited metallic colour palette, eliminating the need to inventory dozens of foil colours.
