    Steel rule dies are the plywood-based, steel-bladed tools that cut and crease folding cartons, labels and corrugated blanks on die-cutting presses.     What is steel rule die cutting — and why the rule choice matters

    Steel rule die cutting is the standard converting method that turns a printed sheet into a finished folding-carton blank, self-adhesive label or corrugated shape. A sharpened steel rule — bent to the shape of the cut and creased outline — is embedded edge-up in a laser-cut plywood base. On a die-cutting press, one stroke cuts, creases, perforates and ejects the substrate in a single pass at 4,000–9,000 sheets per hour.

    Three variables define whether the die performs or jams: rule height (standard 23.8 mm), point size (2 pt paperboard, 3 pt corrugated) and rubbering density. Get any one wrong and the die crushes edges, cracks folds or fails to eject blanks.

    How a steel rule die is made — 5-step process

    CAD prep

    Vector cutting file (CF2, DXF, AI, PDF) with layers for cutting, creasing, perforating and bleed. Confirm ups, spacing and gripper edge with your die-cutter operator.

    Base laser-cutting

    18 mm birch plywood laser-cut with slots matching the cut/crease lines. Slot kerf tuned to the chosen point size — 2 pt board takes a 0.71 mm slot, 3 pt corrugated a 1.05 mm slot.

    Rule bending & insertion

    Hardened steel rule bent on CNC benders to the exact cut outline, then hand-inserted edge-up into the plywood slots. Bridge notches added at short intervals to keep tight radii stable.

    Rubbering

    Ejection rubber (30 / 50 / 70 Shore A) glued alongside every cutting rule, 2–3 mm taller than the blade. Density chosen for substrate: soft for delicate stock, hard for corrugated.

    Mount the die on a matching flatbed or rotary press, run a 20-sheet trial on your substrate, adjust makeready. Ship flat in a wooden crate with digital CAD archive backup.

    Q01What is steel rule die cutting?+

    Steel rule die cutting is a converting process that cuts and creases printed sheets or webs into finished shapes — folding-carton blanks, labels, pouches, blister cards — using sharpened steel blades embedded edge-up in a laser-cut plywood or acrylic base. The die is mounted on a platen or rotary cutting press; a single stroke cuts, creases, perforates and (optionally) strips waste in one pass. It is the standard converting method for paperboard 200–600 gsm, corrugated E/F-flute, self-adhesive labels, foam and thin plastics up to ~3 mm.

    Q02What are steel rule dies made of?+

    Three components: (1) a base of 18 mm birch plywood laser-cut with slots that hold the blades — premium dies use 15-ply Finnish or Chinese birch for dimensional stability; (2) hardened steel rule (Swedish or German origin, 23.8 mm tall standard) bent to the shape of the cut line and inserted edge-up into the base slots; (3) rubber ejection strips glued alongside the rule to push the substrate off after cutting. Creasing rules are blunter and shorter than cutting rules. Perforating rules have periodic gaps. All three rule types can appear in the same die.

    Q03How do I choose steel rule height and point size?+

    Rule HEIGHT sets the total die height (standard 23.8 mm — do not deviate unless your press is custom). Rule POINT SIZE is the blade thickness in points (1 pt = 0.35 mm). 2 pt (0.71 mm) is the global standard for folding-carton board 200–450 gsm. 3 pt (1.05 mm) is used for corrugated E/B-flute and dense laminated boards. 4–6 pt for corrugated double-wall and thick foam. Cutting-edge bevel: 42° for paperboard, 52° for corrugated, 60° for foam and thick plastic. Wrong point size = crushed edge, hairline cracks on fold, or premature blade wear.

    Q04What is rubbering, and why does every steel rule die need it?+

    Rubbering is the strip of ejection rubber glued alongside the steel rule that compresses during the cutting stroke and springs back to push the cut substrate off the blade. Without rubbering the substrate sticks to the blade and jams the press. Rubber comes in three densities: soft (30 Shore A) for delicate stock and fine detail, medium (50 Shore A) for general folding cartons, hard (70 Shore A) for corrugated and dense stock. Profile: dome, rectangular or arch. Height: 2–3 mm taller than the rule so it compresses fully. A well-rubbered die runs 200,000+ impressions before rework; a poorly rubbered one jams within the first shift.

    Q05Steel rule dies vs hot foil stamping dies — what's the difference?+

    Different tools, different jobs. Steel rule dies CUT and CREASE the substrate cold; hot foil stamping dies TRANSFER foil decoration hot. A steel rule die is plywood + steel blades + rubber, runs at room temperature on a die-cutting press, and turns a printed sheet into a finished carton blank. A hot foil stamping die is engraved brass, magnesium or copper, runs at 95–145 °C on a foil press, and transfers metallic foil onto the sheet BEFORE cutting.     Q06How long does a steel rule die last and how do I maintain it?+

    Service life on paperboard: 500,000–1,000,000 impressions before the blades need re-sharpening or replacement; on corrugated 200,000–400,000; on plastic 100,000–200,000. Maintenance: (1) clean the die face after every shift with a soft brush and compressed air — never solvent, which softens the ply; (2) inspect blade edges every 50,000 impressions with a magnifier for burr or roll-over; (3) re-rubber when the ejection rubber compresses more than 20% of its original height; (4) store flat in the original crate away from moisture — plywood swells at >65% RH and slots widen, loosening the blades. A well-maintained die can be re-rubbered and re-bladed 3–4 times before the plywood base is retired.

    Q07What is the difference between flatbed and rotary steel rule dies?+

    Flatbed dies are the standard — flat plywood boards used on platen (Bobst, Heidelberg, Yawa) or clamshell die-cutting presses at 4,000–9,000 sheets/hour. Rotary steel rule dies are curved to fit a cylinder on high-speed rotary die-cutters running self-adhesive label webs at 100–200 m/min. Rotary dies use shorter rule (typically 15.5 mm), are wrapped around a magnetic or gear-driven cylinder, and cost 2–3× a flatbed die of the same face area — but throughput per hour is 10–20× higher. Flatbed for cartons, rotary for labels.
