A hot foil stamping die is the engraved metal tool mounted in the heated head of a foil-stamping press. Under 95–145 °C heat and 3–12 bar of pressure, the die presses hot stamping foil against the substrate and only the engraved raised surface transfers foil — creating the crisp metallic image on cartons, labels, book covers and leather goods.

How a hot-stamping die is made — 5-step process

Q03What is a combination emboss and foil stamping die?+
A combination die stamps foil AND embosses (or debosses) the substrate in a single press stroke. The die's face carries the foil-transfer surface; a matching counter (made in phenolic, fibreboard or CNC-machined brass) sits on the press bed and forces the substrate up into the die, creating the 3D emboss at the same moment the foil bonds. Combination dies are always CNC-brass — magnesium and copper deform under the sustained combination pressure. They cut a two-pass job (foil pass + separate emboss pass) down to one, but they cost 2–3× a plain foil die and need precise counter registration to ±0.1 mm.
Q04How is steel rule die cutting different from hot foil stamping dies?+
Steel rule dies cut and crease — they are sharpened steel blades embedded in laser-cut plywood or acrylic, used on cutting presses to convert printed sheets into folding-carton blanks, label shapes and pouches. They do NOT transfer foil. Hot foil stamping dies transfer decoration; steel rule dies cut the finished shape. A folding-carton line typically uses BOTH tools in sequence: print → foil-stamp with a brass die → die-cut the blank with a steel rule die → fold and glue. Buyers often confuse the two because 'die' is used for both — we quote them separately.

The die face must sit inside the press's maximum stamping area minus a 10–15 mm safety margin, and inside the heated platen dimensions of your specific machine.
