Pharmaceutical Packaging: Security Foils, Label Materials and Serialisation-Ready Stock

Pharmaceutical packaging uses foil and label material as verification features: a registered holographic or security foil authenticates the carton, while the label face must stay printable and scannable for serialised 2D codes through the whole distribution chain.

Pharma buyers evaluate decorating materials against traceability and tamper evidence, not shelf appeal. This page covers the security foil options we supply, the label constructions used for cartons, vials and clinical trials, and the print-quality constraints serialisation imposes.

    Security features on the carton

A security foil combines a covert or overt optical structure with a controlled release, so any attempt to lift and reapply it destroys the image. Registered holographic stamping — where the pattern lands in a fixed position on every carton — is significantly harder to counterfeit than a continuous rainbow pattern, because it demands a press with registration control as well as the right foil.

In practice most programmes layer features: an overt metallic element the pharmacist can recognise, a covert micro-text or nano-structure verified with a loupe or reader, and a serialised 2D code that ties the individual pack to a database.

    • Registered holograms for authentication at the point of dispensing.
    • Tamper-evident destructible faces that fragment on removal.
    • Void-message adhesives that leave a visible pattern on the carton.
    • Covert micro-text and UV-reactive layers for inspection-level checks.

    Serialisation and print quality

Serialised 2D codes are graded, not just read. Grade drops usually come from substrate rather than printer: a face with poor opacity lets the carton show through, a heavily calendered gloss face causes specular reflection, and a rough uncoated face breaks the module edges. A matte or semi-gloss top-coated face is the safe default for late-stage coding.

Keep the code area clear of foil and varnish. Metallic reflectance and high-gloss varnish both defeat vision systems, and rework at the packing line is far more expensive than reserving 25 mm of white space at artwork stage.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes a foil suitable as an anti-counterfeit feature?

Two things: an optical structure that cannot be scanned and reprinted — a registered hologram, micro-text or nano-structure — and a release system engineered so the foil cannot be lifted intact and reapplied. Continuous rainbow patterns are decorative; registered, position-controlled structures are a genuine authentication feature.

Which label face works on refrigerated vials?

A synthetic PP or PET face with a cold-resistant permanent adhesive. Paper faces absorb condensation from refrigerated storage and lose edge integrity, which compromises both legibility and the readability of any printed 2D code.

Do foil features interfere with serialisation codes?

They will if they overlap. Metallic surfaces reflect the illumination used by camera-based verification systems and cause grade failures, so keep the code area free of foil and gloss varnish and design a matte, high-contrast white panel for it.

Can you supply removable labels for clinical samples?

Yes. Removable acrylic adhesives are available on paper and synthetic faces, engineered to peel cleanly from glass and coated cartons within a defined service life. Confirm the intended storage duration, because removability declines as the adhesive builds bond over time.

    What documentation do you provide?

Technical data sheets, specification sheets per production batch, and material declarations on request. Our manufacturing operates under an ISO 9001 quality management system; project-specific documentation requirements should be confirmed before the first production order.
